Joanie’s Cafe - 04.15.2012
Decided to have Sunday morning brunch with my sister and brother-in-law at a new place today. After much time of sitting idle at home trying to figure out where to go, we finally ended up with Joanie’s Cafe located in Palo Alto, CA. We got here around 10am and found out that Palo Alto had their farmer’s market going on right in front of the cafe. After checking into the cafe’s wait list, we decided to take a quick stroll through the farmers market. Found some Naan, Rotisserie Chicken, and even some scrumptious crepes with a huge line forming in front of it.
But anyways going back to Joanie’s… we finally come back and perfect timing, we get seated immediately. I decided to go with the Eggs Benedict and to put their baristas to the test; ordered a cappuccino. Normally I’d order black coffee, but hey; if you offer cappuccinos as a menu offering, expect to be tested by yours truly.
The cappuccino came out and presented really well. But the foam looked a bit too “airy”. Took a spoon and gave it a gave it a good stir. Much to my disappointment, the drink itself was nothing more than a latte with a spoon full of wet airy foam on top. I’m sorry but this doesn’t even pass as a “wet cappuccino”.
The Eggs Benedict came out shortly after. Again, presentation looked great and very appetizing. The country fried potatoes tasted like sliced potatoes mixed with some fresh Mexican salsa mix. Blah! Should’ve ordered the hash browns instead. The Eggs Benedict itself was a huge disappointment. The English muffin was stale and overly toasted. The poached eggs tasted like hard-boiled eggs. The Hollandaise sauce tasted quite good actually, except it had the texture and after taste of that it felt like it has been sitting idle for a while. Sorta tasted a bit stale.
Brief background on my brunch habit::: I love my coffees and my Eggs Benedicts. Every new breakfast/brunch place I visit, if its offered, I will order an Eggs Benedict to give it a try. Flames in DTSJ, Stacks, Los Gatos Cafe, and Navios are just some of the few places I’ve been to in the bay area that has some pretty good, if not great; Eggs Benedicts.
CN: Joanie’s Cafe - good to try once. mediocre food. dont understand why the yelp rating is so high. but definitely will not come back.
